First Annual Volunteer Recognition Awards Ceremony
May 22, 2005

President Elect Mike Moder and Mistress of Ceremonies, Gayle Weller start the afternoon off. This long overdue and now new tradition is a more public way to say "thank you" to the efforts of volunteers this past year. Nice turnout for the first Volunteer Recognition Ceremony.
We begin with members of the Mishkan Committee who helped make the sanctuary such a lovely place to be, taking an office in an industrial park and creating a sanctuary where we sing, dance, learn, pray and grow...Barbara Carr, Barbara Rose, Steve Florman, Elliot Weinstein, Rick King, Mark Nussbaum. Not present: Michael Carr, Bob Siegel, Andrea Glasser In these rooms (and offsite) we've had many holiday celebrations and they don't just happen. Someone has to say "I'll do it." Today we honor the people who have chaired these holiday events: Dijana Florm and her two daughters, Nadia and Audrey - Tu B'shevat; Mort Tuchin & Susan Levine (now shown) High Holy Days; Teri Wilner - Chanukkah; Steve and Nancy Deutsch (not shown) - Passover Seder; Susan Richards and Sharon Parker, Shavuot.
Cheryl Moder and Lynn Dasteel also headed up holiday celebrations this year. Last year at this time our fundraising gala was in the final planning stages; today we honor two people who were instrumental in its success - Lorraine Mautner, silent auction, and Evan Enowitz, Grossmont College Chefs in Training (not shown).
These honorees help to introduce Dor Hadash to the community at large and to keep our members informed of the goings on! Karen Youel, who has been assisting with our public relations listings; Susan Levine, website; Sharon Parker Ha Kesher; Marlene Bellamy (not shown), advertising coordinator.
Our administrator's cherished office volunteers, new member Anita Peterson and long-time member Ethel Slayen.
Richard Tilles has worn many hats at Dor Hadash over the years, but is being recognized today for heading up the short-lived Cantor Search Committee. Our Gesher School is fabulous. One of the reasons is the dedication of the three chairs of the Education Committee: Caroline Harris, Marilyn Scheininger and Alison Skier.
Holly Gail Baumann, Chair, Ritual Committee. Among other responsibilities, Holly ensures we have a spiritual leader at Shabbat services when the rabbi and/or cantor are away. Long-time member, Shari Ciancio, has done so much for so many years. Today she is being honored as Secretary of the Choir and now Chair of the Music Committee and has worked tirelessly in bringing music to Dor Hadash.
Char Katz is another member who is giving and caring. She has helped this year in bringing the Dorotenu wall - our ancestor wall - to fruition. Reuven Rubinson keeps us on our toes. He knows the bylaws inside and out, points out their inconsistencies making sure they get updated, has served as our treasurer and as Chair of the Finance Committee. He has taken on tough jobs...but at least they're not thankless anymore.
Leah Ollman has brought her love of arts and culture to Dor Hadash through her work as Chair of the Programming Committee. Thanks to her we have laughed with Richard Lederer, enjoyed a fun afternoon of dancing, and tasted "pickle soup" with Yale Strom. Mike Moder does focus groups; he loves to get people involved in the decision-making process (so Reconstructionist!) and he likes to plan ahead. He's in charge of the 2010 Committee... aka Long Range Planning Committee. Thank you for helping us plan ahead!
Many thanks to the Rabbi Search Committee - Mort Tuchin; Susan Levine, Chair; Char Katz; Judy Hante; Mark Nussbaum; Belinda Singer (not shown); Ros Goldstein (not shown); Jeff Penner (not shown). They spent countless hours facilitating the successful search for a new rabbi. Ed Director, Barbara Carr and Katrina Mautner, youth volunteer extraordinaire, give and get a hug and a kiss.
Soon to be immediate past president Craig Mautner is recognized for his amazing volunteer contributions to Dor Hadash. Susan Levine was honored with the first Harriette C. Schapiro Volunteer of the Year Award for her dedication, commitment and non-stop volunteering. She was (and is) truly touched by this honor.

And to the volunteers who were recognized but weren't able to come or whose picture just didn't come out (sorry)...or just need to be thanked again...

  • Helene Rotto and Beverly Brown who work hard at keeping the library up-to-date.
  • Terry Keister and Cheryl Kaufman, co-chairs of the Oneg Committee who work tirelessly to be sure there's wine and challah and paper goods and families sponsoring onegs!
  • Jeff Penner, Gesher School teacher and creator and implementor of the Classroom Sponsorships which has raised several thousand dollars for Gesher School.
  • Dave Kirschen, Chair of the Adult Education Committee and the Advertising/PR Committee.
  • Cheryl Moder who designed and printed the Volunteer Recognition Awards.
  • And many, many thanks to Gayle Weller for making the extra effort to create this wonderful, new tradition at Dor Hadash.
